Top 10 Links: How Many Markets Will Google Try To Dominate?

Google’s on a tear to fund projects and build new platforms in
order to continue it rapid expansion and win over the hearts and
minds of the people of the world. Not limited to the advertising
business anymore, they’ve got their fingers in a bit of everything,
from middle-school programming contests to green energy start-ups.
To figure out exactly what Google’s been plotting of late we
scoured our Future Scanner for some information on the search
giant’s plans for the future. Here’s a list of our Top 10
favorites:
1. Google Lunar X Prize – $30 million prize to send a robot to the moon and return with video, images and data
2. RE < C – investing “tens of millions” of dollars to create electricity from renewable energy sources cheaper than generating electricity from coal
3. Knol Project – a user generated knowledge project
4. Google Enabled TVs – teamed with Panasonic to make flat panel TVs equipped with Google services like YouTube & Picasa
5. Google Health – a medical history/personal health record database for patients
6. Genome Sequencing Project – decoding the DNA of 100,000 people in the world’s largest human genome sequencing project
7. Project Palimpsest – Open Source Science – allows scientists to collaborate and openly share their data
8. Mobile Platform Android – open source platform to build mobile apps
9. Google Tools To Power Virtual Worlds – import terrain from Google Earth & models from 3D Warehouse to build virtual worlds
10. Google Sky – zoom in and out of the universe and search constellations with this new freestanding application

Cool list. I’d add that in addition to making Google Earth content interoperable Google is also actively working on 2 virtual world projects, but it’s been rather difficult to find quality info about those. Has anyone come across any such news or speculation?
