The Future of Fishing is Mind Control - Really

In one of the first posts here on Future Blogger, an eloquent piece exploring American Futurism, author bibelnieks jokingly referred to a day when fish would “simply jump into the boat in reaction to [his] brainwaves.” Apparently that day is not as far off as any of us may have guessed.

The Associated Press reports that scientists at the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, which received a $270,000 grant for the project from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), are “testing a plan to train fish to catch themselves by swimming into a net when they hear a tone that signals feeding time.”

“If it works, the system could allow black sea bass to be released into the open ocean, where they would grow to market size and then swim into an underwater cage to be harvested when they hear the signal,” writes the A.P.

Not to mention usher in a new era of commercial mind-control of the animal kingdom.

“It sounds crazy, but it’s real,” said Simon Miner, a research assistant at the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole.

Miner said the first objective was to see if the fish could be trained. He kept the fish in a circular tank and sounded a tone before he dropped food in an enclosed “feeding zone” within the tank that the fish could enter only through a small opening. Researchers played the tone for 20 seconds, three times a day, for about two weeks. Afterward, whenever the tone sounded, “you have remote-control fish,” Miner said.

By May, researchers hope to bring about 5,000 black sea bass to a feeding station, an “AquaDome,” that will be anchored to the ocean floor in Buzzards Bay, 45 miles southeast of Boston.

Imagine how much time, effort and investment will be saved if fish voluntarily give themselves up rather than trying to elude fishermen and fish farmers can liquidate their holdings and turn to the sea for their products?

On the flip side, this opens the door to higher-level mind control, even human-level You Gotta Believe Me technology. Maybe one day we’ll be the ones willingly marching forward to our doom, all the while having thought we were gaining total control of our system. :(
