Digital Books Start A New Chapter
Lighter devices, better displays, and the iPod craze could make them best-sellers If digital books finally do take off, they could change not only how we read, but what we read, too.
Reading off of a computer screen is still demanding, but that’s not going to be the case for long. According to Alvy Ray Smith’s Law interfaces will approach realistic quality by 2015. This means that we should be seeing the rise of ebooks as people begin to feel that reading off of screens gets easier on the eyes.
I think that 2015 is still too soon to think that for a major shift in reading materials. It is going to take a generational change. The majority of the population won’t leave the comfort of paper, not in the next 10 years anyway.
I think the clincher is that these “computer screens” will actually feel and look like real paper, making it easier for them to gain widespread acceptance. I’m looking forward to seeing the positive effects these technologies will have on environmental crises like illegal logging.
