Stephanie Coontz explores the social construct of marriage from it's strict economic and political functions of the past to its stable, optional and fulfilling present. She dissects agents of change from days when men "valued a woman’s cooking and housekeeping skills above her intelligence or education" (1967) to current ideas of egalitarianism and prevalence of alternatives marriages. Coontz ensures that a substantial percentage of people will continue to explore alternatives to marriage, leading to relalities like the fact that today almost 40 percent of America’s children are born to unmarried parents. However, despite such alarming trends, marriage is not on the verge of distinction.
