Nanotubes + sunlight = cheap, green hydrogen

Penn State University researchers are using titanium dioxide coated nanotubes to serve as photoelectrochemical diodes that mimic biological processes in splitting water into oxygen and hydrogen. The process is not yet efficient enough for commercial applications, but nanoscale science and engineering shows the path forward.
