The unmanned Chandrayaan 1 spacecraft blasted off smoothly from a launch pad in southern Andhra Pradesh to embark on a two-year mission of exploration.
This space launch is important not just as a scientific event, but as part of India’s emergence as a global power, particularly in Asia. It is important symbolically, just as was India’s 1998 nuclear bomb tests.
